Working with the National Organic Program, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) upholds a strict standard for framers and producers to identify their products as organic. Taking a “farm to market” stance, the USDA protects consumers from natural ingredients being ruined by unethical production or unnatural ingredients being hidden by environmentally friendly manufacturing. By inspecting farmers and manufacturers on an annual basis as well as testing their products for banned substances, the USDA has one of the most respected stamps of approval. In the case of a failed inspection, the USDA can demand high financial penalties and the removal of any organic certifications. The USDA’s main aim is to protect the consumer who expect the organic products they buy to remain organic through the process of farming to market.
