Where beauty is healthy
Herbana is all about keeping skincare and beauty relaxed, fun and playful but when it comes to ingredients, we think it’s best to be straightforward. Herbana is all about what’s healthy for you which is more than just having a restricted list of ingredients (although we do have the Herbana Ban List). “Clean” is how we describe our store and that’s not just a new way of saying “natural”, rather it incorporates “natural” and “organic” and more.
The Herbana Standard encompasses the below elements:
We source products that are made with ingredients that have very little hazard ratings, and are low risk in personal care products.
Knowing where ingredients come from whether that be a plant, a mineral or a laboratory - and by choosing the best source possible of that ingredient for that particular product. Sometime this means natural sourced over synthetic, but not always. Global sustainability of an ingredient needs to be taken into account for example the ingredient citric acid – sourcing from lemons that need to be grown, watered and harvested or is it more sustainable to use a nature identical lab derived citric acid?
Ingredients are grown sustainably and ideally are grown without the use of unsustainable pesticides. Organic certifications and use of organic ingredients are clearly labeled on bottles and product pages and are able to be filtered in the search function of the Herbana website allowing transparency.
No ingredients and products are tested on animals by us or by any of our stocked brands. Ideally all the people along the manufacturing line who grow, harvest, mine and manufacture the materials are paid fairly and treated with respect.
No green-washing. We look for brands that accurately represent what their products are and what they do. An ingredient is what it is supposed to be – no more and no less. Whether you’re looking for clean beauty, natural products or organic products, we want to correctly provide you with all this information and educate on the difference.
We don’t allow claims that cannot be backed or toxic “incidental” ingredients. Herbana pushes for full ingredient disclosure and this includes any “fragrance” blends which are usually kept hidden.
The complete life-cycle is considered and its potential effects from product/packaging to when it is washed down the drain, recycled or thrown in landfill. More about this here.
The Herbana store has built in the above elements into our operation buying policy called The Herbana Standard. We endeavour to take every one of these elements into account when sourcing and purchasing our products and our brand partners, but it may not be possible to tick each one of these boxes. We strive to get better at this as our business evolves and as new brands, technologies and industry standards evolve over time.
Herbana works closely with all our brand partners to ensure that ‘clean’ actually means something, that it is more than just marketing claims and a “Free of” list.
HUGE VEGAN RANGE
END OF PRODUCT LIFECYCLE
INTEGRITY & TRANSPARENCY
Herbana stocks a large range of products over many categories from skincare, makeup, wellbeing and lifestyle.
When curating our selection we use multiple proprietary tools, scientific research and industry best practices to determine what makes it onto our online store. Our strict selection critera and comprehensive ban list is known as The Herbana Standard. Since our industry is seriously under regulated, it’s largely left up to consumers and companies to define terms and claims.
The Herbana Standard is our way to ensure that you only buy the best and safest products for your family!
Organic Certifications Explained!
In Australia the word ‘organic’ is not regulated so brands and manufactures can use the word on their product packaging and in their marketing efforts without government scrutinization. The only way for you or I to be confident that a product is ‘organic’ is for it to be certified.
We acknowledge that there are many ethical brands out there with great formulations of natural and organic products and their products are not certified organic for various reasons. But if you are looking for a guarentee when it comes to organic products, then a Certified Organic logo is the way to go.
Organic certification involves auditing of a brand, individual products, their suppliers, their manufacturing facilities and their farming practices to ensure that they comply with the guidelines of organic prodution. Below is a list of the most common organic certification used throughout the world and across our store.
