Natural & Organic Beauty and an Intro to Herbana

A green leaf on a label doesn't make a product safe for you. In this article I talk about why the ingredients we put on our skin matter and why I am launching Herbana - you're online destination for Natural and Organic Beauty.

Hello, I’m Rachel McRae, founder of Herbana, Australia’s Natural Beauty Store. I started this company to share my passion for healthy living. A big part of following a healthy lifestyle is using clean, non-toxic beauty and personal care products.

They say that everyone has a story. My own story, or rather “journey,” started when I developed severe cystic acne when I was only 14 years old. Instead of getting to the root cause of my skin eruptions, my doctors prescribed antibiotics and birth control pills to manage my condition.

I say “manage” because at best my skin looked ‘not terrible.’ But these medications never cured my acne or gave me the beautiful, healthy skin I desired. In fact, using antibiotics for more than ten years adversely affected my gut health and the harsh medicated creams made my face sensitive and sore. Then I discovered the ingredients I was using every day could cause birth defects. It was right there written on the back of the cream that I was applying to my face every night ‘may cause birth defects.’ That can’t be good. At that moment I made a promise to myself to find a better way.

It just so happens that around that time my sister gave me a natural deodorant paste to try. Her simple gift manifested into something so much more profound and life-changing for me. It made me question if perhaps my acne was my body’s way of telling me something was wrong and it was the impetus that inspired me to find a natural solution.

Looking back, this incident planted the seed for Herbana. In my search for healthier beauty products I discovered hundreds of toxins lurking in our everyday cosmetics. What’s even more shocking is that even popular brands that market themselves as “natural” or “organic” contain these hazardous ingredients and there’s very little government regulation protecting us and our families.

Herbana’s Promise and Mission

Clean, non-toxic products do exist. In my journey I came across many natural beauty brands right here in Australia. Many of them are artisan-produced by people who genuinely care about your health and the environment. We choose to work only with like-minded individuals who share our same passion, ethics and standards.

Each product listed in our online shop is scrutinized by me personally to make certain it doesn’t contain sneaky ingredients from our “banned list” of chemicals to avoid. Then we test each item to make sure it exceeds our expectations and that we absolutely love the way it smells and feels on the skin.

In a nutshell, our mission is to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to vetting ingredients so you don’t have to. Gaining your trust is so important and for this reason we proudly display all the ingredients and product descriptions for your reading pleasure. All you have to do is choose which products are best for you.

Some Facts About Chemicals in Beauty Products

Did you know that most conventional personal care products contain toxic ingredients? According to a recent article in Huffington Post the average woman inadvertently puts 515 chemicals on her body every day. If you factor in hair products, toothpaste, deodorant, skincare products and makeup then it’s easy to see how these chemicals can add up. Experts may not agree on exactly how much of your personal care product is being absorbed (some sources estimate it to be as high as 60%) but there’s no disputing that some absorption does take place. We know this because nanoparticles in beauty products are engineered specifically to cross the skin barrier.

Chemicals don’t just affect our own health either. They can interfere with our fertility and hamper the healthy development our babies while they’re in the womb. A study conducted by the EWG found that 287 chemicals were present in babies’ umbilical cords. This suggests that moms not only absorb toxic chemicals themselves but they pass them on to their offspring.

Here are some classes of the chemicals found in skincare products;

  • Carcinogens – responsible for DNA mutations that turn healthy cells cancerous
  • Endocrine disruptors – interfere with the body’s endocrine system and production of hormones such as testosterone, estrogen and progesterone
  • Neurotoxins – can disrupt or damage the body’s nervous system

If you’re feeling overwhelmed it gets worse. All these chemicals are being washed down the drain and end up in our rivers, lakes and oceans. In fact, another EWG study concluded that the same hormone-disrupting chemicals found in our cosmetics and cleaning agents (Phthalates, Triclosan and Bisphenol A) have resulted in widespread water contamination. It’s so bad that male fish are turning into females. Humans use thousands of chemicals and the effect these have on the natural world is still poorly understood.

Choose Clean Products for Your Health and the Environment

Are you still with me? Now the good news. Fortunately you have a choice when it comes to purchasing beauty and personal care products. Are you curious about how ditching chemicals can change your life? I can tell you how going natural made a huge difference for me. Not only did my overall health improve and my acne clear up (due to using treatments and not antibiotic pills), but I’ve never felt happier or looked more radiant.

I want you to experience the same amazing benefits when you integrate toxin-free skincare in your routine. Your complexion will come alive with vibrancy, natural moisture and appear more youthful and rejuvenated. And the best part – you’ll be leaving a cleaner environment for future generations. Coming November 2019 our webstore will be live! Visit our online store to view hundreds of non-toxic beauty and personal care products for you and your family.
